The Tax Man Cometh but Who’s Preparing Your Taxes?
Tax time is here. I realize this does not bring about anywhere near the celebration customarily afforded the recently concluded holiday season. Something about 1040 forms, 1099 forms, choosing deductions, and gathering receipts seems much less glamorous than spending time with our families and making holiday memories. But the Tax Man cometh and we all must decide how to respond.
For those of you who will be using a tax preparer or accountant to handle your taxes be sure to do your due diligence. David Gair, an attorney in Texas, has a great article about how to choose a tax return preparer. Take a few minutes to review his article and make a wise decision.
Like most professions the majority of tax preparers are honest and diligent about their work. However, there are always a few bad apples in the proverbial barrel. Wesley Snipes served jail time due in part to bad advice from his tax preparer and the IRS has a webpage devoted to the issue of tax return preparer fraud. If you are in North Carolina and have issues with your tax preparer or believe you have been taken advantage of by someone you had prepare your tax return or other financial reports, contact me to discuss your situation.
I hope your tax season is as painless and short as reasonably possible. Now excuse me as I begin to organize my receipts and files to respond to the Tax Man’s call. Chat back with you later.
