A Red Light of Sorts for “Scrap and Cash” in North Carolina

North Carolina has added some muscle to a law designed to prevent stolen vehicles and their parts from showing up at salvage yards and scrap facilities.  As of December 1, salvage yards and metal recyclers have to obtain additional ID information from persons presenting vehicles and parts.  Additionally, the facilities must verify the non-stolen status of vehicles over 10 years old for which the person presenting the vehicle lacks a valid Certificate of Title.

The new law has led to some positive results as 41 stolen vehicles have been flagged by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles License and Theft Bureau.  The North Carolina Scrap Vehicle Reporting System is another tool in slowing the rate of theft of older vehicles.  Score one more for the good guys and girls….
