Caution for the Consumer: Holiday Edition

Tis the season for the hawking of all kinds of goods and wares as we near the end of another year.  Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away and Christmas is not far behind.  New Year’s rounds out the year and between now and then there are other holidays, observances, and other opportunities for retailers and businesses to attract customers.  Customers are consumers and as consumers have rights.  A few pieces of advice to help you as you consider making that purchase:

  1. Get all warranties, promises, agreements to repair, and other significant representations in writing.
  2. Research the product via Consumer Reports or some similar reputable and preferably neutral source. 
  3. In the case of a vehicle, be sure to shop for price and run your own numbers before even speaking with the dealer.  And try to obtain your own financing.
